Robotics Foundations This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 6-11 year olds who enjoy building with LEGOs and want to learn how to make their projects come to life! The course includes a full LEGO WeDo kit and programming software.
Miriam's Review: I have not seen this class but our robotics team owns 5 of these robots and we LOVE them. We have seen 4 year olds enjoy them with a little adult supervision. The software is intuitive and very enjoyable. The robotic creations are good and the engineering part is good with supervision.
Engineering Foundations This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 6-11 year olds who enjoy building structures and simple machines. It covers all simple machines: the lever, the wedge, the wheel and axle, the screw, the inclined plane and the pulley, as well as two more mechanisms, the gear and the linkage. Build 60 working models, including cars, cranes and all different types of machines. The course includes a kit from Engino.
Miriam's Review: My 11 year old took this class and found it very challenging. The reading that went along with it was more like a 9th grade reading level, but very thorough and informative of history and engineering basics. The pieces were challenging to work with and I would not recommend this for a child under 10.
Entrepreneurial Foundations This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 6-11 year olds who want to learn how earning money works, how to save and pay cash, the importance of giving, how to have fun spending on a plan, the dangers of debt, and the importance of integrity. The course comes with a complete set of materials from Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Junior program.
Miriam's Review: My friend's daughter took this class. It had some good audio stories and very good videos to watch online.
Electricity and Circuitry Foundations This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 6-11 year olds interested in exploring the basics of electricity and making circuits. Students will receive the Elenco®'s Snap Circuits® Extreme kit with colorful pictures to build exciting projects such as FM radios; digital voice recorders; AM radios; burglar alarms; doorbells and much more! Students can even play electronic games with friends!
Miriam's Review: I have not seen this class, but my nephew used the Snap Circuit set and loved it. The curriculum he used was very enjoyable and vast.
Middle School - High School Technology & Entrepreneurial Classes
Digital Media Editing and Graphic Design This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 11-16 year olds interested in learning the principles of graphic design and using GIMP, a digital image editing software, to turn plain photos into spectacular images. Students will also design their own personal digital album collection to share with others.
Joshua's Review: This was a fun course that allows you to be really creative and learn how to edit photos in great detail. They say 11-16 but it might be better for 13+
Robotics I This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 11-16 year olds who are new to working with Robotics. In this course, you'll become familiar with basic robotic terminology, programming and the role robotics have in our world. The Lab section includes building and programming a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT Education robot (kit purchased separately).
Joshua's Review: I took this class when it was in Beta. I had fun because I already knew how to use the robot, but I am sure they have updated it to include lots of challenges to do with the robot to keep you entertained.
Become a Computer Game Designer This course (only available through My Tech High) has been updated and is primarily for 11-18 year olds interested in building their own computer games. Using Multimedia® Fusion® 2—a popular game design software program—students will learn how to create a variety of engaging, interactive games. *Software purchase required (reimbursable if in full-time program).
Joshua's Review: This is a good way to get started on learning to program games if you have never done it before. But the programming software leads you into a dead end, the skills you learn in it are not transferable into other programming languages. Only the basic idea of how to think like a programmer is transferable. I had fun but I found that I wanted something a little more advanced. I would recommend Gamemaker for 2-D games and making apps fromwww.yoyogames.com.
Sound and Audio Mixing This course (only available through My Tech High) is primarily for 11-18 year olds interested in learning about sound, music and audio mixing. Using Audacity®, an open-source recording and mixing program, students will create projects using music, sound effects, audio tracks and more!
Joshua's Review: It is audio mixing and you can learn how to combine different tracks of audio together and generate some simple sounds. You learn what an audio engineer's career entails.
3D Modeling This Edgenuity-hosted course is primarily for 14-18 year olds interested in creating 3D models, characters, objects and scenes. Using Blender®, a popular open-source 3D modeling package, students learn about shapes, textures and light.
Joshua's Review: I didn't take this class. I know Blender is a free 3D modeling software. If you want to go pro, blender would be a good way to learn the basics of 3D modeling and it can go pretty far to make nice finished movies, but its not a professional software.
Computer Science I In this Edgenuity-hosted, introductory computer science course (primarily for 14-18 year olds), students learn the basics of programming in hands-on projects that encourage creativity and experimentation. Apply key computer science concepts to programs created in and run by Python®, learn about the real world experiences of programmers, and develop the skills needed of a programmer.
Joshua's Review: I didn't take this class. I know Python is an easy to learn programming language that is not widely used.
Introduction to C++ Programming In this Edgenuity-hosted course, students (primarily for 14-18 year olds) will build fun games and useful programs and discover the power of the C++® programming language. Use C++ to create a calculator, a “guess the number” game, a tic tac toe game, a quiz show game, a visual Hello World project, and a powerful organizer application.
Joshua's Review: This is a very simple way to make web sites. It is a good way to get started on HTML but does not teach you enough to make a modern looking website. Your web site will turn out looking like websites from the 90's. If you want a nice looking website it would be best to go completely HTML free and use one of the online website makers such as Weebly.com. If you want to start in a career in website design, this class would be a great way to start.
Online Training Library (from Lynda.com) Primarily for 16-18 year olds, Lynda's Online Training Library® is a constantly growing and evolving body of training video tutorials designed to help you learn what you want, when you want it. We provide access to 1,350 courses and 77,091 tutorials organized by subject, software, and instructor. We feature training courses for a number of disciplines: 3D, video, mobile apps, business, photography, web design, graphic design, and more. Our content grows every week, sometimes every day. Specific software costs not included (reimbursable as part of Technology Allowance for those in the full-time program.)
Joshua's Review: It is good if you have a specific computer program you want to learn such as Autodesk, Photoshop, Android Apps. Lynda library was able to teach me Autodesk very easily with their step by step videos. I had tried an Autodesk curriculum for a robotics platform but because it didn't have videos showing exactly what to click it was a lot harder. Youtube didn't have enough followup videos in a row. So you would get one good experience and another bad experience and sometimes you didn't get what you wanted. Note, this is a self study class.
